Spring in Ann Arbor

So far, things are moving along and the winter term is almost over. Spring break was fairly uneventful for me - I stayed home in Ann Arbor, worked a little bit, and finished up with the Michigan hockey game against Ferris State. The hockey game was interesting, and I saw my first puck-in-the-face. :)

Classes are still pretty difficult. I'm planning on taking some classes over the summer, perhaps at UM or at a local community college. Upcoming major events: a chem lab exam on Tuesday, and a major Spanish essay due next week. But this semester has been so long... I need to focus.

In terms of non-academic events, I am also participating in Relay for Life on April 5, which I need to start fundraising for. Next Saturday there is also a large APA show/convention that is being hosted by UM called "GenAPA" with different Asian organizations from UM as well as oher schools. Also, I managed to get two tickets to see the Dalai Lama on April 20, which is very exciting. My sister can't wait. :)

Now, it's time for my chem lab review session, and then some studying. :)

The days are getting longer

When I go to work, it's definitely not as dark as it used to be, which is a very good sign. :)

Things are about the same with me, although the classes are a little different. This semester I am still taking 16 credits: Chem 215 + 216 (Organic Chem 2), Spanish 276, Anthrcul 101, and Asian 221 (Great Books of China). I have quite a bit more reading for these classes than I had for my previous classes, so that has its pros and cons. However, I am really enjoying a book that I am reading for anthro called "In Search of Respect." It was written by a self-described "skinny white guy" who lived for years in East Harlem studying social marginalization through his best friends, street-level drug dealers. It is well-written, and I especially enjoy the dialogue that is included.

Upcoming events for me, both fun and not so fun: tonight I am going to the UM vs. MSU hockey game, whoo! It should be really exciting, so I'm looking forward to it. Not so exciting is my first chemistry exam this coming Tuesday, which means I'll be spending the entire weekend studying chem and only chem.

Well, I'm off to do some reading from "Mencius." Have a great weekend!

The holidays are almost over

Hello again! Winter break is almost over, and in a couple of days I will be starting my 2nd term in college. My first semester was quite an experience, one filled with new people, new challenges, and new realizations. It was not exactly perfect or extremely smooth, unfortunately, but it was definitely a very important learning experience for me that woke me up. Now, heading into a new set of classes and a "fresh start," I realize that I need to make some changes in some of my habits, and get back to the focus that I feel like I lost this past year.

On a more upbeat note, I had a very relaxing two weeks of break with my family. I caught up on sleep, ate lots of good food, and did some traveling as well. For Christmas, I got a nice UM watch. :) I'm planning to celebrate New Year's Eve with some friends, and then maybe get together to watch the Capital One Bowl. Then, it's back to campus to buy my new books and start the new semester.

I hope that everyone has had a good holiday season, and have a happy new year!

Finals week!

Hello again! It is now the beginning of finals week, and it is really quite hectic! Everyone is studying, everywhere: the computer labs are full, the printers are jammed from all the printing that everyone is doing, libraries are full, and empty classrooms are occupied. I am actually quite worried about all of my finals, because the just cover so much.

Tomorrow is the last day of classes, and then I am almost done with my first term in college! My first two finals are this Thursday, with 1 hour in between my Orgo final and my Great Books final. Then, my last two finals are the coming Monday, with math in the morning and spanish ending at 9pm.

On a good note, my registration for the winter term went smoothly and I got all the classes I wanted/need to take: Spanish 276, Chemistry 215/216 (orgo II), Anthrocul 101, and Great Books of China. Oh, but I still need to schedule some volunteering at the hospital.

Busy busy... eek. I will try my best in finals, hopefully they go well.

Hello again!

Sorry that it has been so long since my last post, I'll try to make it up to you! :)

My birthday was actually 10/24, which was actually a day that started at 8am and ended at 9pm. So that wasn't that fun. But my mom insisted on dropping off a nice home-cooked dinner for me, plus a cake from my dad, so that made it much better. :)

Test/important assignments-wise, I had my second orgo chem exam, two Spanish exams, a Spanish project, and a Math exam. The chemistry exam surprisingly was the best; the rest did not go as well unfortunately. But, I still have some time until the term is over, so I'm going to try my best to do ridiculously well in everything. Hopefully things will turn out well!

I did go to the OSU game this Saturday... can't really say too much about that. But, the good thing is that I was so cold that I couldn't really focus too much on the game. The bad thing is I still have a slight fever from that day.
Oh, and in case anyone was at the game or watching ESPN Game Day, you may have noticed two kids wearing only yellow hula skirts and playing a bagpipe. I know these people from high school (one from elementary school), and they both live in my residence hall. A brush with fame, I guess. lol.

Another highlight was a performance of "La Boheme" that I saw at the Power Center by the University Opera Theatre. It was set in modern times, which I wasn't crazy about, but the singers were excellent. I thought the female characters were played particularly well; the ladies who played Mimi and Musetta were excellent. Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening.

As of now, I am really looking forward to Thanksgiving break!!! Classes end at 5pm on Wednesday, and I'm going to meet up with some out-of-town friends at a potluck right after. Then on Friday after the Black Friday sales, I'm going to go my very first UM hockey game (against Wisconsin). Yay!

What college has taught me so far (other than academic things): good footwear is important because you walk a lot, good outerwear/winter clothing is very important because you walk a lot, and free food is important because you never have enough. Go blue!

*The shoe thing, that might just be me. I think I was born with "picky" feet, and my years of figure skating definitely did not help. But all the walking... I hope it applies to everyone. ;)

Hello!

This is my very first blog and blog post ever, and I'm pretty excited about figuring it out and becoming a blogger! So, first off, a little bit about myself: my name is Rhoda, and I am a freshman at the University of Michigan in LSA Honors from Ann Arbor, MI (a very long journey). I have one sibling, a younger sister, as well as a very cute dog named Maggie. I have a huge sweet tooth, but I also like vegetables and fruits, except for melons. I really, really dislike melons. I also have been figure skating for around eight years, although I haven't had much time for skating recently.

I am currently undeclared, but I am going on the premedical track to hopefully become a MD one day. Although, I'm not positive about that career track either. I would like to become a doctor, but I am also very interested in business (financial analysis and economics). So, I guess I'll see what will happen.

After two months at college, my current summary of college is that it's hard. And in exchange for a college education, people sacrifice sleep for four years. I drink a lot more coffee, and free food is now a very strong motivation for me to go anywhere, although I miss my mom's cooking because dorm food is usually not very good. But, I am enjoying living in South Quad because it's close to everything, although that sometimes makes me late to class because I think it's closer to the Diag than it actually is. My first big roommate issue has come up, though, so that's not so good.

I'm taking 16 credits this term: Great Books, Chem 210 (organic chemistry), Spanish 275, and Math 116. I actually had my first blue book exam today for Great Books, but I think that I'm still going to avoid the M on the Diag. I have my second chemistry exam next week.

Besides classes, I'm in the Pre-Medical Club as well as K-Grams, a pen pal program with local elementary school kids. I'm a Swing Kid for K-Grams, which means that I'm in charge of a classroom. When I was in elementary school I actually participated in K-Grams, so it's pretty exciting that I'm doing it again, but on the other side this time.

I'm actually in the Fishbowl in Angell Hall right now; my next class is at 12pm. So, that's all for now! :)
